What is Ethereum? Ethereum is an open-source blockchain platform that supports smart contracts. The Ethereum blockchain has a cryptocurrency coin, Ether (ETH), which is the second-largest cryptocurrency in market capitalization, after Bitcoin. Vitalik Buterin, a Russian-Canadian programmer, released the first Ethereum white paper. The white paper won him the Thiel Fellowship award, together with a $100,000 prize. His work also attracted other developers such as co-founder Dr. Gavin Wood and Joseph Lubin. Together, they launched the Ethereum crowdfunding campaign in July 2014 before launching the Ethereum network in 2015.
