Stage 1: Problem/ Need recognition (TOFU)

TOFU stands for top of the funnel. This is the highest point of the funnel and the point at which the volume of people/traffic is high. At this stage, a person must be aware that they have a problem or that they have a need.

If they are not aware of a problem or need that they have, they will not make a purchase. The problems or needs may vary among the different businesses out there.

Let’s take a simple example. You visit the doctor and it turns out your medical problems are originating from your weight issues. So the doctor advises you to lose some weight in order to stay healthy.

So in this example, we have identified excessive body weight as a problem.

Stage 2: Information search(MOFU)

MOFU stands for the middle of the funnel. Once you are aware that you have a problem, the first thing that you might do is to seek more information on your problem.

Information gathering methods are quite many and the method chosen may be situational depending on your problem. Let’s use our example above. For starters, the doctor is the one who gave the information about the need to lose weight.

So it is natural that the doctor may be our first source of information. He may recommend dietary changes or daily exercise. He may even go further to recommend a nutritionist who can help with the dietary changes.

You may also lookup the internet for fitness programs or even diets that will suit you at the moment. At this point of the funnel, information is important no matter how it is acquired by a customer.

This stage of the funnel is important for businesses because they need to position themselves in such a way that they are accessible or can be found easily by someone looking for certain information.

Having this in mind, as a business you will need to have a strong social media presence or a website that can be found easily with the information the customer is looking for.

Stage 3: Evaluation of Alternatives (MOFU)

This stage could run concurrently with the previous stage. Customers looking for information gather different information and compare the information to suit their needs.

The time spent on this stage may vary based on the type of information being looked for or the purchase being thought about. Customers are more likely to undergo a much more careful and thorough evaluation process if the purchase is expensive or requires a higher commitment on investment.

They may request trial versions of programs, samples of products, demonstration videos, etc. so that they can make a good decision.

If for instance, you are selling slimming tea to weight watchers, some may need a sample to test the effectiveness of the product and to also ensure that the product does not contain harmful ingredients.

Stage 4: Purchase Decision (BOFU)

BOFU stands for bottom of the funnel. After a potential customer goes through the 3 stages above they may now get ready to make a purchase.

In this stage, testimonials or previous proof of the success of your product may push the customer to buy the product. If there is negative feedback from previous customers this may hinder the potential customer from making a purchase especially if it’s from a number of previous customers.

Stage 5: Post Purchase behavior (BOFU)

After purchase, the process isn’t over. Whatever happens, after a purchase is very important and also very much part of the funnel. At this point, customer experience is very crucial. 

After the customer has made the purchase, how they get treated after the purchase may determine if they will recommend the product to other people. It also reassures a customer that indeed they made the right decision.

If the customers are disappointed after the purchase and are met by a terrible customer experience, they may not recommend your services or products to anyone and worse still, they may ask for a refund.
